When It's Time to Replace in Rockledge

Rockledge is really two cities under one ZIP, the older grid along the country club bluff and the newer subdivisions west toward Murrell Road, and each one reaches the end of the road in its own way. Here is what we actually see when a system is done being repaired and it is time to plan a replacement.

A lot of the original systems in the 1950s and 1960s Country Club Estates, Levitt Park, and Virginia Park homes are simply at the end of their life now. These slab ranches were built through the Apollo era, and even a system replaced once or twice since then is aging. If yours still runs on R-22 refrigerant, that is a clear signal. R-22 has not been produced since 2020, the price to recharge a leaking system keeps climbing, and it is money spent on equipment near the finish line anyway. At that point, a replacement almost always makes more sense than another recharge.

In those older neighborhoods the air handler usually sits in an interior hall closet or a garage closet, feeding a single central return that was undersized from day one. When we replace one of these, we look at whether the return and duct runs can breathe before we just swap the box, because a right-sized system on starved ductwork never performs. Along Rockledge Drive and US-1, up on the bluff above the Indian River Lagoon, the brackish air off the water pits the coil fins on uncoated condensers in about five to seven years. Once that corrosion is advanced, cooling capacity drops off and a coastal-coated replacement is the honest fix.

The newer two-story homes out along the Murrell Road and Barnes Boulevard corridor are a different story. Those run attic air handlers with long flex duct runs over the insulation, and a lot of the summer performance loss there is the ductwork, not the box. When one of those systems reaches replacement age, we plan the whole job, the equipment and the returns and the duct condition, so the new system is not fighting the same hot attic it always has. We already run these same Brevard housing types daily in the neighboring Viera and Suntree corridor, so Rockledge homes are familiar ground.

What's Included in Your Rockledge System Replacement

A replacement is more than dropping in a new box. Here is exactly what a Florida Air whole-system replacement covers, spelled out so there are no surprises.

  • Right-sized equipment via a load calculation. We run a Manual J load calc on your actual home instead of matching whatever was there before, so the new system fits your square footage, insulation, windows, and ductwork.
  • Matched indoor coil and air handler. The outdoor unit, indoor coil, and air handler are matched as a set so the system runs at its rated efficiency, not a mismatched pairing that never performs.
  • New or flushed line set. We install a new refrigerant line set, or fully flush and pressure-test the existing one when it is sound, so old oils and contaminants do not foul your new compressor.
  • New thermostat. A new thermostat matched to the equipment, set up and explained before we leave.
  • Permit and Brevard County inspection. We pull the county permit and schedule the inspection so your install is documented and code-compliant.
  • Safe haul-away of the old system. We remove and responsibly dispose of your old equipment and recover the refrigerant. Nothing gets left in your yard.
  • Manufacturer warranty registration. We register the manufacturer warranty in your name so the coverage is actually active, not something you find out was never filed.
  • Return-air and duct correction where needed. On the older single-return homes we address the return sizing and duct runs so the new system breathes, rather than choking a right-sized unit on undersized ductwork.

Repair or Replace? What We Tell Rockledge Homeowners

We are not going to talk you into a new system you do not need. The rough rule we actually use is simple: look at the age of the equipment and the cost of the repair. If your system is past about 12 years old and the repair runs close to half the cost of a new one, replacement usually wins, because you are spending real money on equipment that still has aging parts everywhere else. If it is younger and the fix is small, we tell you to repair it and move on.

The other big one in the older Rockledge grid is R-22. If your system still uses R-22 refrigerant, it predates 2010, that refrigerant is no longer made, and recharging a leak is throwing good money at old equipment. When we see an R-22 system with a leak, we are honest that a replacement is usually the smarter spend, and we show you why rather than just asserting it. On the lagoon side, an uncoated coil pitted out by the salt air is another case where a recharge only buys a little time.

If you already have a quote from someone else and it does not sit right, get a second opinion before you sign. We do that for free, and we would rather tell you your system has good years left than sell you something you do not need. You can read more about how we think through it in our repair vs replace guide, or just request a free second opinion.

What Goes Into Your Price

Every Rockledge home is a little different, so the honest answer to "what does it cost" is "it depends on a few things." Here is what actually moves the number, so you know what you are paying for.

System size and tonnage

The Manual J load calculation tells us the right tonnage for your home. A 3,000 square foot Murrell Road two-story needs more capacity than a small Country Club Estates ranch, and the size of the system is one of the biggest drivers of cost. We size it right rather than overselling tonnage you will pay to run.

Coastal coil upgrades on the lagoon side

If your home sits along Rockledge Drive or US-1 above the Indian River Lagoon, a coastal-coated coil resists the brackish-air pitting that eats uncoated fins in five to seven years. It adds to the cost, but on the water side it protects the investment. West of Fiske we usually skip it, because the location does not warrant it.

Return-air and duct correction

Many Apollo-era Levitt Park and Virginia Park homes were built with a single undersized central return that starves airflow and leaves back bedrooms warm. If yours needs a larger return or duct improvements to let the new system breathe, that is factored in, because a right-sized unit on choked ductwork never performs the way it should.

Efficiency and SEER2 choice

A higher-efficiency SEER2 system costs more up front and less to run every summer. We lay out the options for your home and budget so you can decide where the trade-off makes sense, rather than steering you to the priciest tier.

A new system does not have to be paid all at once. We offer financing through our lending partners so you can spread the cost over time. Ask us about the current options when you call, or see our financing options.

For real price ranges by system type, see our cost guide. And before you buy, check whether your new system qualifies for an FPL rebate of up to $550 on high-efficiency equipment.

Why Florida Air for Your Rockledge Replacement

Anyone can install a box. Here is what actually separates a replacement with Florida Air from one with a company that does not know these homes.

Family-Owned, Not a Call Center

When you call, you get Wes and Rachel, not a dispatcher reading a script. We are a family-owned Brevard company headquartered in Palm Bay, and we already work the neighboring Viera and Suntree corridor heavily. Rockledge homeowners get the same owners on the phone and the same crew on the driveway.

We Know These Specific Homes

Apollo-era single central returns in Levitt Park and Virginia Park, interior-closet air handlers in the Country Club Estates ranches, lagoon-side coil corrosion on Rockledge Drive, and long attic flex runs in the Murrell Road new-builds. We plan the replacement around what your particular home needs, not a one-size template.

Honest Written Estimates

You get a clear written estimate before any work starts, with the sizing and the scope laid out. We are licensed under CAC1823291, our techs are NATE-certified, and we live in the same Brevard summers you do. Our reputation here is not an abstraction, it is our neighbors.

Rockledge AC Replacement FAQs

Real questions from Rockledge homeowners planning a new system, answered straight.

We look at three things with you: the age of the equipment, what a repair costs against the value of the system, and whether the failure is a warning of more to come. A rough rule we use is that if the system is past about 12 years old and the repair runs close to half the cost of a new one, replacement usually makes more sense. The other flag we watch for in the older Rockledge grid is R-22 refrigerant. If your system still runs on R-22 it was built before 2010, that refrigerant is no longer produced, so a recharge keeps getting more expensive and it is money spent on equipment that is near the end of the road anyway. We give you both numbers and the honest reasoning, then you decide. No pressure.
Almost certainly, yes. Homes right along Rockledge Drive and US-1 sit on the bluff above the Indian River Lagoon, and the brackish air off the water pits uncoated condenser coil fins in about five to seven years. Once that corrosion is advanced, the coil loses heat-transfer capacity and the system works harder for less cooling. When we replace a lagoon-side system we quote a coastal-coated coil so the new unit stands up to the salt air instead of rotting out early. West of Fiske and out toward I-95 the air is drier and a standard coil is usually fine, so we do not upsell the coating where the location does not call for it.
That is one of the most common calls we get in the Apollo-era neighborhoods like Levitt Park and Virginia Park. A lot of those 1960s slab ranches were built with a single central return, and a 2.5 or 3 ton system pulling through one undersized return runs starved for airflow. The back bedrooms sit at the end of the run and never get their share, so they read several degrees warmer while the thermostat by the return says the house is fine. People often think it is low refrigerant, but it is static pressure. When we replace a system in one of these homes we look hard at the return and the duct runs first, because dropping a new box on the same choked returns just repeats the problem.
Yes. Every system replacement we do in Rockledge is pulled under a Brevard County permit and passes a county inspection when we are finished. That is not an extra we upsell, it is how the work is supposed to be done and it protects you. A permitted install means the equipment, the electrical, and the condensate handling all get checked by the county, and it keeps your manufacturer warranty and your homeowner's insurance clean. We take care of the paperwork, schedule the inspection, and register the manufacturer warranty in your name so the coverage is actually active.
The only honest answer is that it depends on your home, and we figure it out with a Manual J load calculation rather than guessing off square footage or matching whatever was there before. A 1,400 square foot Country Club Estates ranch with settled attic insulation and a single central return has a very different load than a 3,000 square foot Murrell Road two-story with attic ducts. We measure the space, factor in your insulation, windows, sun exposure, and duct condition, and size the system to match. A right-sized unit runs longer, quieter cycles, pulls out more humidity in our 74 percent summers, and costs less to run than one that is oversized and short-cycling.
Gladly, and it is free. Rockledge is contested territory with plenty of companies staged out of Cocoa and Merritt Island, so it pays to have a second set of eyes before you commit to a five-figure purchase. We will look at the sizing on the other quote, check whether the tonnage matches what your home actually needs, and tell you straight whether it is a fair scope or whether something is off. We would rather tell you your quote is solid, or that your current system has good years left, than sell you something you do not need. Bring us the quote and we will walk through it with you.
